[MUSIC PLAYING] Often, when I talk to small business owners about SEO, their eyes glaze over from confusion. They think it's too technical. They think it's overwhelming. And they just don't want to deal with it. In this course, I hope to demystify SEO and show you how it will help you grow your business. So let's start with a basic definition. What is SEO?
SEO, which stands for Search Engine Optimization, is a marketing technique that focuses on helping your business show up in relevant search engine results. As a business owner doing search engine optimization, your goal is to make sure that when a potential customer searches for things related to your business, your website appears on the first page of Google, and hopefully, near the top.
Before we get into the fundamentals of how to do just that, I want to share a metaphor about SEO that I hope will help you think about it in a different way. SEO is like a three-layer cake. The foundational layer at the bottom is what we call keyword research. This layer acts as the strategy that informs everything else you do. The middle layer is called on-site SEO, and the top layer is called off-site SEO.
You need to have each layer in place before you can add the next one. I'll teach you about all three layers and how to use them in this course. Now, let's head to the next lesson to learn more about the benefits of SEO for your business. [MUSIC PLAYING]
