Most online creators aim to grow an audience across multiple platforms but how do you actually get users from one platform to cross over and follow you on another? Well, the answer often lies in a technique called cross promotion. My name is Aiden Robbins. I'm a filmmaker and content creator. And today I want to share with you four ways you can naturally and effectively cross promote yourself on social media. First, make sure not to repost the exact same thing across multiple platforms.
This doesn't give people an incentive to follow you on both because each platform you post on should provide a value to your audience that the others don't. A bad example of this would be to post the exact same video on YouTube and on IGTV. Whereas a more engaging alternative would be to post the main video on YouTube and a behind the scenes on IGTV. When you post unique content on each platform, your audience is missing out if they only follow you on one.
Next, make sure to utilize the unique link sharing options of each social media platform. On YouTube, you can add links to your channel banner and your video descriptions. And on Instagram, you can add the most important link into your bio. And if you have over 10,000 followers, add additional links in your stories. Consider using a platform like Link Tree, which allows you to group all of your important links into one page.
This is the first step to ensuring that your audience always has the option to quickly jump over and follow you on your other social media. When you're actively cross-promoting your work, make sure you have something new and specific to promote. A bad example of this could be just randomly shouting out your podcast on your Instagram story. Whereas a more engaging alternative would be to take an enticing snippet from that podcast episode and post it on your Instagram story the day it goes live, giving people the option to swipe up and watch the full episode.
Finally, when you're promoting your work across various social media platforms, make sure you embrace the format of each platform. When I promote my YouTube videos by reposting them on Instagram, I take a short clip from that video and crop it to four by five, which is the main aspect ratio for Instagram posts. When I'm promoting a YouTube video on my Instagram story, I'll shrink the video down and add a short description and a photo background this way.
I'm making a more effective use of that vertical space. To recap, make sure to post unique content on each platform, utilize each platform's link sharing options, cross-promote as naturally as possible and make sure to embrace each platform's unique format. And now you should be on your way to building an even stronger brand across social media.
