[MUSIC PLAYING] To photograph our shirt, we want to do a photo with a shirt on a person. This is Janet. She's a new friend of mine here at Shopify. She's going to act as our model today. Let's go ahead and just dissect our set to begin with. So as we discussed, we have our window light coming in here to the right and just our simple white wall. And that will be our background. That'll be similar to the sweep that we had on the product set.

What's really unique about this set is this giant piece of white foam core here. So you can use hard wall insulation from Home Depot or you can use this piece of foam core that we got at the art store. And then we have Janet here. So Janet, come on up here. Go ahead, and turn around, and show her back. So we styled her shirt by just putting a clamp on there.

So that's something you want to consider when you're doing your own styling is how is this shirt going to lay. And Janet, go ahead turn around. So Janet's makeup looks really great and so does her hair. She actually spent a lot of time preparing this to look really good for this shoot. If you're not thinking about these things, your shoot may not look at the level that you want it to look. So let's go ahead and get started with the shoot.

Go ahead and go right against that back wall there, so that's where I'm going to want you to stand. Let's go ahead and look at our camera set up here. I'm using the DSLR for this. And I've set this up already in auto, so I already have the right exposure. I set it up with the exposure compensation to get the right exposure here. I'm going to go ahead and take a look. I'm just going to take one shot to see where we're at.

Move over a little bit to the left. Good. Let's go and take a look at the image here. I'm going to look at the back of the camera. So I'm going to zoom in a little bit and I'm really going to evaluate this image. I'm going to look at her hair. I'm going to look at her makeup. I'm going to make sure I feel good about it because now is the time to do it. Because once we start shooting, we're going to start shooting 30 to 50 different images in a row.

So let's get back into here. I'm going to look at her clothing again. Again, I'm thinking like a stylist since I don't have a stylist on set. And everything looks good to me, so I think we're ready to start shooting. It's also, if you're shooting tethered, you can also look on your computer as well. And that's a really good way to make these evaluations. But since we're not shooting tethered, we just look at the back of the camera.

So now we're going to start shooting. If you have some music, now is a good time to turn it on. Remember, you're working with an actual person, so you want to put them in a really positive mood, you want to make this place really fun. And just try and have a good time with this stuff because it's meant to be fun. All right, so Janet, go ahead and show me some poses. Good.

Great. Good. Good. So one thing I want you to notice is Janet's expressions are really positive and upbeat. And the reason why she's doing that is because I showed her the mood board before and we discussed the kind of personality that we want for our brand. So she knows that ahead of time. Let's go ahead and keep shooting. Good.

Good. Great. Wonderful. Good. One thing that I didn't mention is this reflector board is pushing the light into the right-hand side of her body and really filling in that light. And that's really making this look a lot better. You can tell it was really dark on the right-hand side. It would be that dark in the product. And so that reflector board really helps bring out the shirt.

Good. Good. Good. And so Janet is doing a really good job, which is moving around a lot. And that's really what you want your model to be doing, so that every shot is just a little bit different. So Janet, go ahead and just give me just straight on, like let's say you've never been on set before. Let's say you've never had your photo taken. You probably wouldn't know what to do, right?

So this might be what your model might look like. Good. Let's brighten up a little bit. Just give me a smile. Yeah and the thing is that Janet's not really moving around that much. And I think when a new model comes up-- she's never done it before, like a friend-- this is probably what you're going to get. So you're going to have to coach them a little bit to get them in the right head space and doing the right stuff.

So Janet, let's pretend you've never done this before. I want you to just give me little movements here. See what I'm doing? Just like I'm moving a little bit in between each shot. And every time you hear the shutter click, give me just a slightly different expression, OK? So good. Good. Good. Now, shuffle your feet a little bit. Great.

Loosen it up. Great. Give me a little bit of a body rotation, too, towards the light. Good. Good. And look here into the lens. Good. And just keep moving around a little bit in between each shot. Good. Yeah, now you're getting bigger with your movements. And you can see how I had her open up a little bit with her movements and just really coached her into these different styles of positioning.

So let's keep going. Good. Good. Great. Great. Now, let's-- Shopify. Yeah, good. Great. So we've probably shot-- I don't know-- maybe 30, 40 shots, and I'm feeling really good. I feel like we've got the shot. So we're going to go ahead and wrap up and head over to Lightroom and just really make sure that we get the shots that we need, make any adjustments that we need.

We just wrapped our shoot with Janet and I just uploaded all our images into Lightroom. I've already shown you how to do that, so I'm going to skip that part. But you can see we have many, many photos of Janet here. Which one is the best one for our store? So this is a really great way to edit your photos. Instead of just trying to pick one, really the best thing to do is just go through and do an edit.

And so how we're going to do an edit is we're going to bring up the image on full. I'm going to put my finger on the 1 and I'm going to have my other right hand on the arrow. And anyone that pops out to me, any image that I really like of Janet that I think shows off the shirt, where she has a great expression, where she has a great pose, I'm just going to press 1. And I'm going to be really generous about this. I'm not going to edit myself.

If it feels good, I'm just going to push 1 and then I'm going to edit it down later. So I like this one. This one's good. Maybe this one. There, I like that one. Ah, her hands are out. I'm looking for blinkers. No, no, no, no. This one's good.

Maybe that one. This one is good. Maybe not. If I don't like it, I can press 0 and it'll remove the star. I'm just going to keep going through just all 140 images here because, remember, we took a lot. That one is great. Great.

I'm looking for great smiles, great body positioning, just anything that pops out to me. Great. Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to sort by one star and go through the one stars and sort that down into two stars. So to do that, I'm going to go into the filter section here in the lower right-hand corner. I'm going to go to Rated. It's going to pop up a little filter section and I can sort by one star, two star, three star, whatever. And so now we have our one stars.

These are all the ones that just generally popped out to me. We have 13 images of the 94. So now I'm going to go through. I'm going to put my finger on the 2 and I'm going arrow through each one, anything that pops out to me, the ones that I think are the best. I think this first one is good. I like that one a lot. I like them a little bit more subtle, maybe not as bright. There, that one for sure.

That's a good one. That one. Maybe she's pointing to Shopify, that's a fun one. And then this last one. So it gets easier, the tighter you edit your image. So now I'm going to sort by two stars. I'm going to go to the three. I really love this first one. I always pick it. See, it's getting a little-- every time I go through it, I pick a different set of images.

This is the only way to go through this many images, and notice how fast I'm doing it. Maybe that one. So now we're down to four images. Once you get down to around four or five images, I'm going to select them all. I'm going to press N and go into this survey view. And I'm going to look at all four and I'm going to make a decision, which one is the shot for my store.

I'm going to look at how the clothing is styled. Like, I think this one, the clothing is a little too tight there, so I'm not going to pick it. I'm going to get rid of that one. This one is looking really good on the clothing. Her expression is looking good. Her position is looking good. Both these are looking really good. This one's just a little too silly, so I think I'm going to get rid of that one. So it's down to these two. Which one is the best? I think this one.
